JCQ Exam Access Arrangements – Assessing for Mathematical Fluency

Assessing and understanding maths fluency is the JCQ requirement that secondary schools and Further Education Colleges will need to understand for this year’s regulations this course will help you to address this issue.

This webinar will examine the construct of mathematical fluency. Fluency with number is largely influenced by working memory and speed of processing efficiency. We will look at how this may present in the classroom in terms of typical and atypical behaviours, how fluency can be impacted by mathematics anxiety and how that can be managed, and how to investigate maths fluency efficiently in an EAA assessment.

Recognising and Making Effective Recommendations in Diagnostic Reports for Learners with Mathematical Difficulties and Dyscalculia

Part One - The Spectrum of Maths Learning Difficulties

Part Two - Maths Difficulties in Dyslexic Profiles

The first part of this two-part webinar will explore what is dyscalculia and what is maths difficulties, and how these conditions exists alongside other learning differences such as dyslexia and dyspraxia, and the effective recommendation and reasonable adjustments that an assessor can recommend in their diagnostic assessments.

The second part will explore dyslexia difficulties alongside dyscalculia difficulties and the most effective assessment instruments which can investigate the impact that maths difficulties have on the dyslexic profile

Essay Writing for Students in Higher Education and A-Levels

In this session you will be introduced to a very straightforward approach to essay writing. Sandra Hargreaves, the trainer, has used it with students for nearly forty years. It takes all the stress and anxiety out of essay writing by suggesting steps through which you can proceed.

Instead of waiting for inspiration, you move through analysing the question. You ask what type of question you are dealing with, by initially looking at a list of question types. When you have ascertained the question type you move on to work out the type of answer, it is requiring. This again can initially be done by referring to a short list. Once this is decided you look at the key words and then move on to the general issues surrounding the question.

Phonology - Promoting the development of clear speech for phonic reading and spelling

A practical webinar where you will learn the hierarchy of the development of speech sounds and carry out an assessment from a sample of speech.

The objective is to understand when speech work intervention is needed and how you can embed phonology work into your phonic teaching as an inclusive approach to improve early literacy outcomes.

Supporting Learners Working Remotely with Specific Learning Differences

The webinar will help an educator to teach a learner with a Specific Learning Differences to work effectively remotely. The aim of the webinar will be to help the educator to navigate the unchartered waters of supporting learning remotely. Time will be built into the webinar to take questions and to share good practice.

Course Outcomes
The webinar will share ideas on:
Helping learners to get organised for remote learning
Supporting working memory in the remote learning environment
Avoiding information overload
Multisensory techniques for remote learners
The benefits of remote learning for some learners with SpLD

Mindfulness - An Effective Tool to Improve Learning

Research has demonstrated that Mindfulness can be an effective and powerful tool for learners with learning differences to help them improve their concentration, reading and studying.
This half day course is a recording of a live event and will give delegates the opportunity to observe practical application of Mindfulness techniques and approaches.

The initial focus of the training is around learners at risk of mental health issues or who are facing mental health issues, which may arise from their learning difference or from other academic pressures.

Participants will be able to observe and participate in a range of mindfulness exercises and learn how to take this back to their classrooms/offices and adapt.

Parent Workshop: The Curious Case of ASD and ADHD

Children only spend 18% of their time at school. This means that the home environment is vital in helping children with ADHD and ASD learn to cope with school and the wider world.

This presentation helps parents and carers to support their child with learning, behaviour and socialisation issues.

Issues to be covered include:

Demystifying the traits of ADHD and ASD
Boys and Girls in terms of ASD and ADHD
Introducing the SF3R approach to supporting key traits (S = Structure; F = Flexibility, and the 3Rs = Rapport, Relationships and Role models)
Flexible strategies for learning at school and at home
Developing rapport through effective communication
Feedback in terms of rewards and consequences

Parent Workshop: Helping my Child with Speech Difficulties to Learn how to Read and Write

The webinar is designed for parents working with preschool and up seven-year-olds and for children with persistent articulation difficulties. Producing correct speech sounds is the cornerstone of reading and writing.

Introduction
This parent webinar is designed for parents to help their children who may be having difficulties articulating sounds. The course will show parents strategies that they can apply at home to help their children improve their articulation of speech sounds.

Course Description
7.4 % of children have Developmental Language Disorder (Bishop 2010), many other children have difficulties with speech and have other learning differences. Producing speech sounds is the cornerstone of reading and writing.

Parent Workshop: Improving your child’s reading comprehension

This webinar is being offered to enable a parent to work with their own children at home to help the child improve their reading and reading comprehension.

10% of children in primary schools have a problem understanding what they read (Hulme and Snowling, 2009). By putting into place effective strategies, we can help children with their reading comprehension.

This hour-long webinar will focus on reading for meaning and will demonstrate a range of strategies that parents can use to improve their child’s:

listening skills
reading fluency
reading accuracy
reading comprehension
