Handwriting Assessment

Writing and transcription skills (handwriting and keyboarding) are critical throughout education and in employment. However, these are complex skills and students with cognitive, attention, language or motor coordination difficulties may struggle to become proficient in this area. This can have a negative impact on classroom learning, examination performance and self-esteem. The use of robust assessment tools will aid in the identification of and support for individuals with writing and handwriting difficulties. This presentation will introduce practical ways to assess the speed and legibility of handwriting and to evaluate written composition skills.

New Developments in our Understanding of Dyslexia: Implications for Assessment and Identification

Despite decades of research, it has been difficult to achieve consensus on a definition of common learning disabilities such as dyslexia. This lack of consensus represents a fundamental problem for individuals with dyslexia, their families, and professionals in the field. Relatedly, common approaches to assessment of individuals with dyslexia do not result in sufficiently reliable and valid identification. Because dyslexia is a latent condition with multiple symptoms, not all of which will be present in every individual, approaches to identification that primarily rely on any single criterion are problematical.

Ten Vital Representations in Primary Maths

25 per cent of primary-aged pupils in a sample size of 1408 pupils were considered by their teachers to have arithmetic problems (Ramaa and Gowwramma, 2002).Thus, developing a strong sense that a number can relate to concrete numerical qualities which can translate into visual mathematical images, which can develop abstract mathematical thinking, is vital in developing mathematical ability. This course uses educational aids which will arrest the difficulties that the learner will face in understanding the application of number and how to apply mathematical concepts.

Enhancing your Dyslexic students Self-Esteem

Children’s level of achievement and behaviour are influenced by how they feel about themselves- that is, their level of self-esteem. Learners with an SpLD may have a lower Self-esteem due to their learning difference. As this webinar will demonstrate the teacher can have a profound positive impact on their learner.

Denis Lawrence is an international expert on self-esteem and learning difference will demonstrate how a teacher can apply three basic characteristics from counselling into their teaching to help their learners develop their self-esteem.

Writing Skills for Reluctant Writers - Secondary

Writing today is not a frill for the few, but an essential skill for us all. This course will help you motivate your students to begin to write and organise their thoughts. This presentation provides solutions for students who can “talk” a subject effectively but who struggle to get their ideas down on paper at the same level of competence.

Written language is considered by many to be the most challenging skill to teach and to learn. However, there are many oral and written activities that teachers can use concurrently with teaching of reading and spelling which will encourage the student to begin writing.

Supporting Students In Higher and post 16 Education: Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation

Course Description: (maximum 750 characters including spaces, if the ‘Full’ description above can be used, please state that). The aim of this presentation is to look at ways to help your students in higher and post 16 education with grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Grammar, spelling and punctuation are topics that many find difficult but there are some basic, easy to learn rules that can help transform your students’ writing. The presentation will discuss the following fundamental aspects of grammar:
* parts of a sentence
* subject-verb agreement
* the eight parts of speech
* use of tense
