Dyslexia: A Very Short Introduction

This ‘very short introduction’ provides an accessible overview of this exciting field of research, beginning with its history, and drawing on testimony from people living with dyslexia. Considering the potential causes of dyslexia, and looking at both genetic and environmental factors, Professor Snowling shows how cross-linguistic studies have documented the prevalence of dyslexia in different languages. Discussing the various brain scanning techniques that have been used to find out if the brains of people with dyslexia differ in structure or function from those of typical readers, she moves on to weigh up various strategies and interventions which can help people living with dyslexia today.

Standardised Test: Principals, Interpretation and Action for the Beery VMI: SASC Authorised

This webinar will provide an opportunity to understand the nature of assessment with regards visual/motor difficulties as related to learners with specific learning difficulties. Using the ADHD Child Evaluation (ACE), to identify ADHD in Children: SASC Authorised

This training is led by Professor Susan Young, an internationally recognised expert in the field and author of the ADHD Child Evaluation (ACE) and ACE+ for adults; this event provides a four hour training session in using the ACE assessment tool. (The training does not include training in the ACE+ assessment for adults).

The ADHD Child Evaluation (ACE) is a structured diagnostic interview, which contains each of the 18 DSM items both currently and retrospectively, that can constitute the characteristics of ADHD. The SASC guidance strongly recommends that this diagnostic interview data is collected alongside an assessment report to make an onward referral to a clinical expert

Potential Issues for Dyslexic Students Being Taught using a Validated SSP Programme in KS1

This lecture, presented by Dr Grace Elliott and Emma Haatnell-Baker, will focus on issues relating to the development of phonemic awareness and single word decoding and encoding skills when a DfE validated SSP programme is used to teach phonics in KS1.

Cognitive scientists have shown beyond doubt that fluent, accurate decoding is a hallmark of skilled reading. Automatic word recognition, which is dependent on phonic knowledge, allows the reader to attend to meaning. Slow decoding overloads short-term memory and impedes comprehension.

Assessment of Dyslexia: Constructs and Challenges (SASC Authorised)

The purpose of this session, by Prof Nancy Mather, is to discuss the cognitive, linguistic risk factors, and reading and writing abilities that should be included in a comprehensive evaluation for dyslexia .In addition, the presenter will describe several challenges that are inherent in the assessment of dyslexia, including: the over-reliance on phonological processing; the difficulty with early identification; the dilemma of twice exceptional students; the existence of co-occurring disorders, such as ADHD and language impairments; and the failure to implement the educational recommendations. Suggested solutions will be provided to address these challenges.
