Department for Education's Phonics Screening Check video

This video was designed to help Reception and Year 1 teachers interpret children's reading responses to score the Phonics Screening Check. It has other uses too.

Watch this video with a colleague. It gives some clear examples of correct and incorrect sounding out of graheme-phoneme correspondence, essential to fluent reading. Some errors are easier to spot than others. With your colleague, discuss:

*  which errors would you find easy to identify?

* which errors might be harder to spot?

* Which errors do you commonly hear in your learners?

* Which error types might you investigate further if you heard your own pupil making them?

For further information, there is a transcript of this video available from the DfE website.
