Could Technology Offer Teachers an Effective Way to Differentiate and Personalise Phonics Instruction and Provide a More Inclusive Learning Environment within the Neurodiverse Classroom?

Technology can be an effective and successful aid for digital natives and especially so for neurodivergent learners. This lecture will explore different ways to incorporate technology, highlighting specific benefits when tasked with teaching phonics, a constrained skill.
Most children are digital natives however some teachers might feel overwhelmed or lack confidence in using ipads and other digital devices. Technology provides a platform for customised learning experiences, catering to each student's unique strengths and weaknesses. Students can access tailored content that suits their learning style and pace when using technology in ways not possible via direct instruction from a teacher.

Testing Processing Speed using the Adolescent and Adult Second Edition (DTVP-A: 2) Visual Motor Efficiency Index (VME): SASC Authorised

The world-renowned eminent neuropsychologist Dr.Cecil Reynolds will discuss his assessment tool the Adolescent and Adult Second Edition (DTVP-A: 2) Visual Motor Efficiency Index (VME) as a replacement for the Symbol Digit Modalities Test for testing of processing speed. This test is on the The SASC Test Evaluation Committee (STEC) approved listing to replace the Symbol Digit Modalities Test.
The webinar will address the concept of cognitive processing speed and explain the concept and how to assess it. Processing speed will be defined and described primarily from the perspective of Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory.

Applying for access arrangements for learners with complex needs or an EHCP

In this webinar, Louise Green and Gareth Cadman will consider the processes involved in applying for access arrangements for learners with a range of complex needs and will address the issues involved in deciding appropriate and relevant access arrangements for these learners.

In theory, an access arrangement which does not require an assessment should involve a straightforward process: the SENCo or Specialist Teacher will confirm that the difficulty exists in the classroom and that the proposed access arrangement reflects the candidate’s normal way of working in the centre, and this will be supported by evidence from a medical or other expert.

Re-appraising your test battery for assessing for access arrangements (SASC Authorised)

In this session, Louise Green will consider the range of tests required by access arrangements assessors and explore some of the issues involved when looking to update your test battery.

Recent changes to the regulations for access arrangements have required assessors to review their battery of tests. Louise Green, a well-known expert on access arrangements, will bring her considerable experience and practical knowledge to the fore in discussing some of the issues involved when deciding which tests to consider.

How to Conduct a Remote Online Diagnostic Assessment: SASC Authorised

This webinar, presented by Lia Castiglione, provides assessors with valuable information and guidance on carrying out remote diagnostic assessments using digital resources and an online platform

Lia has carried out a great number of remote online assessments and will share the knowledge and experience she has gained. This method of assessment can enable diagnostic assessors to work in a more flexible way and to assess over a wider geographical area. However, there are important considerations that need to be addressed to ensure best practice in assessment and valid and reliable outcomes.

Should we Assess and Train Learning and Study Strategies? - Dr Cecil R Reynolds

Research for more than 50 years in educational and related areas of psychology has demonstrated repeatedly that students who engage in strategic learning and test-taking perform at higher levels academically than those who do not. Academic achievement levels can be improved significantly by improving the study skills, learning, reading comprehension, test-taking, and related strategies of learners at all ages and is effective with both regular and special education students. Many students will not develop them, and yet these are all skills that can be taught. Minority and lower SES students are less likely to have these skills without instruction. These skills are critical to success in learning.

Development of Writing Assessment Tools for Children and Young People (SASC Authorised) - Prof Anna Barnett and Dr Nichola Stuart

Writing and transcription skills (handwriting and typing) are critical throughout education and in employment. The use of robust assessment tools contributes to the identification of and support for individuals with writing and transcription difficulties. In this seminar we provide updates on practical ways to assess the speed and legibility of handwriting and to evaluate written composition skills. The new Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting – 2nd Edition (DASH-2) will be reviewed. We will also consider how DASH scripts can be used to obtain information on broader aspects of legibility and writing quality. Application of the Handwriting Legibility Scale and Writing Quality Scale with scripts from 14-25 year olds will be examined.
