Standardised Test: Principals, Interpretation and Action for the Beery VMI: SASC Authorised

This webinar will provide an opportunity to understand the nature of assessment with regards visual/motor difficulties as related to learners with specific learning difficulties. It combines both theory and practice to enhance the knowledge of the participants and improves their existing practice. Delegates will review the principles of standardised assessment and the selection of valid, reliable and up-to-date test materials to meet learners’ individual needs. There will be an opportunity to consider best practice in reporting outcomes, keeping records and processing information within the participants learning environment.

Dyslexia: A Very Short Introduction

This ‘very short introduction’ provides an accessible overview of this exciting field of research, beginning with its history, and drawing on testimony from people living with dyslexia. Considering the potential causes of dyslexia, and looking at both genetic and environmental factors, Professor Snowling shows how cross-linguistic studies have documented the prevalence of dyslexia in different languages. Discussing the various brain scanning techniques that have been used to find out if the brains of people with dyslexia differ in structure or function from those of typical readers, she moves on to weigh up various strategies and interventions which can help people living with dyslexia today.

Effectively Using the Online Version of Wordshark to Improve Students’ Literacy Skills

This course will take delegates through the process of using the online version of Wordshark. Based on Jane’s successful application of this programme to support students in primary, secondary and FE education. The Wordshark programme has been available to teachers for many years, providing supplemental teaching in a structured, cumulative way for all students who require support in developing their literacy skills. It is now available as an online version for teachers and tutors, where students can login from home as part of their intervention and support or work independently during group lessons during school time, at their own level.

Diagnostic Assessment at Secondary Level: Best Practice in Testing and Reporting: SASC Authorised

This course is designed for assessors in SpLD to gain or refresh their knowledge in the assessment of students at KS 3/4, including pertinent factors related to this age range and how to write accessible, informative reports. The analysis of data and learner profiles to form confident conclusions is discussed in actual cases. This day has been designed for specialist teachers/assessors in SpLD working with secondary age students who wish to gain or refresh their skills in the assessment of learners at Key stages 3 &4. It will focus on the production of a well written diagnostic assessment report which takes account of both the quantitative and qualitative information gathered to enable schools to understand the needs of the students.

SpLD Assessment at Primary Level: Interpreting Findings and Making Recommendations: SASC Authorised

Using real case studies, this webinar, presented by Karen Bartlett, focuses on how to interpret findings in order to make the most appropriate recommendations at primary level.

The key to enabling students move forward following a diagnostic assessment is that appropriate interventions are put in place based on the assessment outcomes. It could, therefore, be argued that the recommendations section of a report is the most important. This course looks at converting the information obtained from a diagnostic assessment into practical recommendations which reflect the child’s needs at this level of study. It will also outline how to ensure reports are future proofed.

Tricky Profiles at pre 16 – Looking Beyond the Scores: SASC Authorised

The webinar, presented by Karen Bartlett, will examine tricky profiles and encourage participants to look beyond the scores when making a diagnosis of dyslexia, considering protective and compensatory factors

The course will broaden knowledge and understanding by considering a range of different assessment profiles which evidence dyslexia. It will look beyond the scores and ensure assessors effectively consider the background information and qualitative information along with the scores. It will consider protective and compensatory factors and their impact on assessment and diagnosis.

Identifying Dyslexia in Learners at Pre-16 who have Complex Needs

This course is aimed at practising assessors who assess in the pre-16 age group or those working with adults who wish to further their knowledge of assessing in this age group. The course will broaden knowledge and understanding by considering a range of neurodiverse needs, incidence and effects of co-occurrence and how to identify dyslexia in this group of learners.
This course will explore a range of neurodiverse needs and explore how learners are impacted by those needs. It will consider co-occurrence with dyslexia and how this presents in terms of strengths and difficulties. There will be an overview of tests that benefit and challenge learners with complex needs and how testing needs to be adapted, whilst still following guidance.

SDMT – Current Issues Regarding the SDMT: SASC Authorised

The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) is a test that is used to assess visual processing. However, caution needs to be applied in using this test both in the scoring and interpretation - presented by Louise Green.

The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) is a test that is used to assess visual processing. Many assessors find it a useful addition to their test battery, but it needs to be used with care. Louise will explore the ‘strengths and weaknesses’ of the SDMT and go over the SASC guidance. She will also explain how to score and interpret the test.
