Accommodating the Neurodiverse Learner with Attention Needs

In this webinar, presented by Helen Driver, delegates will consider the learner with significant attention needs and will explore their learning profiles and how they may be supported in accessing the curriculum.

There are commonalities between the learning profiles of those with different diagnostic labels. There are potentially 1 in 5 children in each class who may be considered neurodiverse and in the view of the webinar presenter, Helen Driver, when it comes to learning it should be considered that we all think differently, and we need to support attention needs with or without a diagnostic label. Therefore, educators need creativity and a wide range of teaching methods. This webinar looks at the differences in processing.

Understanding Orthography and the Test of Orthographic Processing, 2nd ed.(TOC-2): SASC Authorised

This session, presented by Dr Nancy Mather, will describe the assessment of orthography

The presenter will: (a) clarify terminology, (b) review the characteristics of poor orthographic processing and how it impacts literacy development, and (c) describe both informal and standardized methods for assessing orthographic knowledge, including the Test of Orthographic Competence-2 (Mather et al., 2023).

One important aspect of reading and spelling development is acquiring knowledge of the orthography of a language. Unfortunately, little attention has been paid to the importance of orthographic processing. In addition to phonological awareness, orthographic processing another important linguistic risk factor for dyslexia.

Language & Communication Needs Reception – Year 4

Educators face ever increasing demands in meeting speech, language and communication needs. Helen Driver shares some inclusive and individual support strategies.

You will explore speech, language and communication needs and learn about inclusive and individual support strategies

Post covid in 2021, The Education Endowment Fund found that from 58 primary schools questioned, 96% were concerned about speech and language development. Oral language comprehension and expression are inked to literacy development. In view of a current shortage of speech and language therapy and long waiting times for additional needs support, Helen Driver, speech and language therapist shares some inclusive and individual support s

OnDemand: Using the Woodcock-Johnson IV Batteries (WJIV Cog, WJIV ACH and WJIV OL) when assessing primary and secondary-aged learners: SASC Authorised

This webinar, presented by Lia Castiglione, discusses the use of the Woodcock-Johnson IV batteries (WJIV Cog, WJIV ACH and WJIV OL) in diagnostic assessments.

In the context of the SASC report formats for primary and secondary-aged learners, this webinar provides the opportunity to evaluate the use of the three Woodcock-Johnson test batteries in diagnostic assessments.

The session aims to provide a deeper understanding of the WJ IV batteries to enable delegates to make informed decisions about what these batteries may offer to their own practice and how they might be used within a diagnostic assessment. The session will follow STEC/SASC’s guidance on the use of each of these batteries.

Understanding Maths Anxiety

Maths anxiety is associated with reduced attainment and avoidance that can ultimately define career decisions and opportunities. But we’re still developing our understanding of how and why this develops. Research suggests that this can be grounded in initial experiences with maths, and in some cases, children’s performance starts to decline from as early as 4 years of age

Research tells us that maths anxiety is a complex construct, and this session will look at the distinctiveness and impact of maths anxiety, the range of factors that are implicated in its emergence and maintenance and understanding the role of emotions and the cognitive effect.

Supporting maths at home - Q&A ‘ask the expert’ discussion session

Children/young people with a diagnosis of dyscalculia will find maths hard; but children with dyslexia, dyspraxia or no diagnosis at all can also find aspects difficult.

As a parent it is tricky to know how best to support your child. Whether that’s because you found maths easy, or hard, or were just taught differently; it can be so frustrating watching your child struggle. Fear of maths (or maths anxiety) can also come into play. However there are lots of simple things that you can do at home to reduce that fear and to make maths fun. Often its just knowing where to start and how to help that can be the issue.
