Applying for access arrangements for learners with complex needs or an EHCP

In this webinar, Louise Green and Gareth Cadman will consider the processes involved in applying for access arrangements for learners with a range of complex needs and will address the issues involved in deciding appropriate and relevant access arrangements for these learners.

In theory, an access arrangement which does not require an assessment should involve a straightforward process: the SENCo or Specialist Teacher will confirm that the difficulty exists in the classroom and that the proposed access arrangement reflects the candidate’s normal way of working in the centre, and this will be supported by evidence from a medical or other expert.

Testing Processing Speed using the Adolescent and Adult Second Edition (DTVP-A: 2) Visual Motor Efficiency Index (VME): SASC Authorised

The world-renowned eminent neuropsychologist Dr.Cecil Reynolds will discuss his assessment tool the Adolescent and Adult Second Edition (DTVP-A: 2) Visual Motor Efficiency Index (VME) as a replacement for the Symbol Digit Modalities Test for testing of processing speed. This test is on the The SASC Test Evaluation Committee (STEC) approved listing to replace the Symbol Digit Modalities Test.
The webinar will address the concept of cognitive processing speed and explain the concept and how to assess it. Processing speed will be defined and described primarily from the perspective of Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory.

Could Technology Offer Teachers an Effective Way to Differentiate and Personalise Phonics Instruction and Provide a More Inclusive Learning Environment within the Neurodiverse Classroom?

Technology can be an effective and successful aid for digital natives and especially so for neurodivergent learners. This lecture will explore different ways to incorporate technology, highlighting specific benefits when tasked with teaching phonics, a constrained skill.
Most children are digital natives however some teachers might feel overwhelmed or lack confidence in using ipads and other digital devices. Technology provides a platform for customised learning experiences, catering to each student's unique strengths and weaknesses. Students can access tailored content that suits their learning style and pace when using technology in ways not possible via direct instruction from a teacher.

AI: a Threat or Opportunity in Teaching Dyslexic People

Increasingly dyslexic students are using AI (Artificial Intelligence) programs that can research and write papers. Some dyslexic adults have embraced and welcomed it as a good starting point to begin to write. How as educators and parents should we encourage or discourage our students to use AI programmes such as ChatGPT? This webinar, presented by Alistair Brown of AI-Upskill, offers you the opportunity to understand what Language based AI is and for you answer this question.

Dyslexia can be caused by problems in phonology or orthography or both. This webinar is presented by Grace Elliott and Emma Hartnell-Baker

Phonology: the sounds of a language. Orthography: the marks of a writing system, including the spelling patterns This webinar address how you use orthography alongside phonics to improve the child’s ability to read and spell.

This training course is in two parts: one hour 20 minutes from 3.30-4.50pm on Thursday, 16 November 2023 and 3.30-4.30pm on Thursday, 30 November on Zoom.

Should (and Could) the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check be Extended to Include Reading Comprehension?

Should a combined approach to comprehension and the goal of reading be applied to beginner readers? This is the question that this webinar will discuss. This webinar is presented by Emma Hartnell-Baker and Grace Elliott

Reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. It relies on two, interconnected abilities: word reading (being able to decode the symbols on the page) and language comprehension (being able to understand the meaning of the words and sentences). In this interactive webinar the trainers will address whether even for beginner readers we can combine reading with understanding.
