Research for Teachers: Strategies for supporting dyslexic pupils

This research summary explores the findings from a literature review that focused on the nature, causes, diagnosis and various forms of support for dyslexic students based on different underpinning theories and philosophies. The research highlighted what teachers and schools have done to enhance the learning of students with dyslexia. This includes the kind of teaching and learning environment that was found to be supportive of these learners and the strategies that enhanced the learning of some of them.

This article comments on the practice and principles of selecting appropriate teaching approaches for use with children with dyslexia. Teaching approaches can be divided into four broad areas: individualised approaches; support approaches; assisted learning and whole-school approaches. In determining the most appropriate programmes and strategies for children with dyslexia, a number of factors  are considered.
