Mentoring a colleague who teaches reading - phonics video
This video was created by the DfE to support teachers using the Phonics Screening Check. However, it is a useful resource in its own right.
Watch the video together, and use it to explore typical reading errors emerging from problems with sounding out Grapheme-Phoneme correspondence. It provides a clear depiction of correct and incorrect sounding-out and blending, both for real and non-words.
The video could also be displayed on a Whiteboard, for a larger group discussion or INSET. One area for discussion might include errors that are harder to spot than other errors. Another theme is how to distinguish a correct pronuciation from a regional or otherĀ accent.
