The Literacy and Dyslexia/SpLD Professional Development Framework is an easy to use online tool that encompasses the levels of knowledge and skills required across the education workforce to support all learners with Dyslexia/SpLD.
About the Framework
It comprises of six key strands which are broken down into individual competencies. These strands include:
- Development of language and literacy
- Theories of dyslexia/SpLD
- Identifying and assessing dyslexia/SpLD
- Supporting and teaching learners with dyslexia/SpLD
- Communicating and working with others
- Professional development and dyslexia/SpLD
Individual competencies are allocated to one of five progressive stages of knowledge and levels of skill which correspond to specific roles across the workforce.

What are the benefits of using the Framework
The Framework can be used in a variety of ways:
- As a self assessment tool to identify strengths and evaluate further training needs
- An initial reference point for informing those with responsibilities for others’ CPD in supporting learners with dyslexia/SpLD
- An online tool of helpful and relevant signposting to resources
- In consultation with a wide range of stakeholders including teachers and representatives from Local Authorities, universities and non-governmental representatives.
- Referenced/bench marked to related frameworks including the Qualifications and Credit Framework, Professional standards for teachers, and the Speech , Language and Communication Framework
